"Energy Demands on Water Resources" was drafted by the U.S. Department of Energy in response to a request from Congress asking for a report "on the interdependency of energy and water focusing on threats to national energy production resulting from limited water supplies." Published in December 2006, this sobering report provides an informative account of how much water is used in different forms of energy production, how much water will be needed to meet future energy demands, and how our projected water supplies in the 21st century fall far short of what will be needed for the domestic, agricultural, and energy sectors. Thus, the report presents a wake-up call to policy makers, water utility managers and river advocates as it concludes that water scarcity is threatening the U.S.'s economic growth and ability to become energy independent.
