Event Info
Join us for our next State Policy Showcase!
We are excited to welcome two experts to tell us about state-level floodplain restoration and protection policies in Washington and Vermont, including the nuts-and-bolts of the policy and what drove action by decision makers:
- Kathleen (Kas) Guillozet is the Senior Director of Bonneville Environmental Foundation’s Watershed Program to tell us about Washington’s Floodplains by Design program and lessons she and her partners learned along the way
- Mike Kline is a River Ecologist who worked as the State of Vermont’s Rivers Program Manager to tell us about Vermont’s Functioning Floodplains Initiative and lessons he and his team learned in the process
Both states’ policies and the speakers are newly featured in River Network’s State Policy Hub.
Additional Information
In our next State Policy Showcase we will be joined by Kas Guillozet and Mike Kline who will tell us about Washington and Vermont’s state-level floodplain restoration and protection policies.
In both case studies, we will hear about the nuts-and-bolts of each state’s floodplain restoration and protection policy as well as the enabling conditions and hazard mitigation strategies that led their state leaders to act. Both states’ policies and the speakers are newly featured in River Network’s State Policy Hub where you can read about Vermont’s Functioning Floodplains Initiative and lessons from Mike and Washington’s Floodplains by Design program and lessons from Kas and her partners.
Following the case studies, we’ll have group discussions on topics such as key components needed in a floodplain restoration and protection policy, where these policies might be ripe, barriers and roadblocks you’re likely to encounter, strategies you’d use to overcome barriers, windows of opportunity you’d look for, coalitions you’d want to build, and other strategies you see are needed to successfully advance floodplain restoration and protection in your state.
Please join us on January 29, 2025, at 2:00 PM ET for our next State Policy Showcase on State Policy Approaches to Floodplain Restoration and Protection.

About the State Policy Showcases
“State Policy Showcases” are a forum for water advocates working to advance state-level water policy to learn and share state policy successes on a variety of clean water issues. The showcases feature both the “nuts and bolts” of the policy and how it works, as well as the “how-to” and what it took to get the policy adopted including the strategy, campaigns, coalitions, etc.
We host several showcases a year and feature different water-related policies and case studies from network members who worked on getting those policies adopted during each showcase, as well as facilitate discussion so advocates can ask questions and share ideas and experiences.
If you have a suggestion for a policy you’d like to learn about or a case study you’d like to share – as well as any other feedback on this idea – please reach out and let us know.
And stay-tuned! We have more state policy showcases on-deck for later this year.
