In this recorded webinar, the second in our Urban Waters Learning Network series on gentrification and displacement, we explore different ways data is being used by communities and decision-makers to understand displacement vulnerabilities, inform infrastructure investments and policies, predict areas at risk of gentrification and displacement, and assess equitable development plans.

Presenters:

• Mychal Cohen of the Urban Institute, provides an overview of the Turning the Corner project, highlighting lessons from five sites that piloted research to measure neighborhood change. The findings of the Turning the Corner project emphasize that both qualitative and quantitative data are necessary to get an accurate picture of neighborhood conditions. He also introduces a guide to using data to inform interventions to prevent displacement, as well as engage residents in the decision-making process more effectively.
• Sarah Duda of the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University, shares lessons learned from the 2016 project Measuring the Impact of the 606, a greenway project in Chicago. Results of the study were used to develop an online interactive tool for mapping displacement pressures in Chicago that can be used for evaluating future projects.
• Somala Diby of the Urban Institute co-authored a recent report detailing the results and impacts of the implementation of the 11th Street Bridge Park Equitable Development Plan in Washington DC. She shares how data is being used to assess the progress made on that project and the lessons that have been learned.

This webinar is the first in a series hosted by the Urban Waters Learning Network, as part of an effort to dig deeper into a topic that has long been a concern of our members: the gentrification and displacement of people that we see taking place in our urban communities, oftentimes following efforts to revitalize and reinvest in the places we call home. We are addressing this topic through this webinar series, blog posts, Impact Stories, and other resources.
