Environmental Senior Program Officer
Job Functions
Strategic Philanthropy
- Build and maintain trusting, transparent relationships with current and potential environmental partners in Indiana and Arizona.
- Serve as the Trust’s internal expert on environmental giving, environmental conservation best practices and local and regional environmental issues.
- Oversee environmental proposal reviews and present funding recommendations.
- Monitor and evaluate environmental grants and strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with grantees and community partners in Arizona and Indiana to collect and interpret local and national environmental and philanthropic trends to inform Trust giving.
Community Outreach
- Serve as a liaison and provide support to the nonprofit environmental community in Indiana and Arizona.
- Represent the Trust at grantee and community-related events.
- Participate regularly in community and professional organizations, seminars, forums, and meetings related to the Trust’s work and interests.
- Assist with communications promoting the mission and work of the Trust to the broader community.
Job Qualifications
- Has a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years relevant work experience.
- Has a professional background and/or volunteer experience in environmental conservation.
- Demonstrate experience and commitment to working with community partners to advance sound environmental conservation practices.
- Exhibit outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Research and digest community level data to effectively inform strategy.

Working Conditions
The Trust currently utilizes a hybrid schedule, working in the office at least three days a week and remotely for the rest. In-office time is used primarily for team meetings and formal and informal collaboration. When in the office, standing for short periods of time, minor lifting and walking are occasionally required. The position requires approximately 10% travel, which includes periodic trips to Arizona or Indiana (based on the incumbent’s primary location) and/or to professional conferences. The incumbent will be required to visit current and potential grantees in Indiana and Arizona.
Salary and Benefits
Anticipated starting salary of at least $125,000. The ultimate salary will be determined based on the skills and experience of the candidate and the Trust’s equitable pay practices.

Rio Grande Program Manager
- Serve as TRCP’s policy lead for the Rio Grande watershed with focus on advancing federal and state policy initiatives such as increasing public funding for watershed conservation and restoration initiatives, ensuring robust protections for water resources critical to sustaining fish and wildlife, and strengthening regional water planning efforts.
- Lead and participate in coalitions with conservation organizations, Pueblos, acequias, agricultural water users, and other stakeholders to advance federal and state water and natural resource policy objectives.
- Provide support to partners engaging in on-the-ground conservation projects including working to secure public and private funding to increase the pace and scale of fish and wildlife habitat restoration efforts.
- Conduct legal and policy research and prepare reports and presentations on natural resource issues for partners, federal and state decision-makers, and other stakeholders.
- Assist TRCP’s Director of Water Resources in cultivating and maintaining relationships with key federal and state decision makers and other important stakeholders, including through facilitation of meetings, project tours, media briefings, and other events.
- Contribute to fundraising for program work through relationship development with foundations, grant reporting and tracking, and grant proposal development.
- Experience working on Rio Grande and/or western water issues, particularly related to water scarcity, agricultural water management, fish and wildlife habitat restoration, or healthy rivers.
- Experience with policy and legal analysis and advocacy.
- Experience cultivating and sustaining relationships with varied interest groups including Tribes, elected officials, utility or industry organizations, sporting and conservation organizations, and/or governmental agencies.
- Experience managing multiple complex projects and ensuring program accountability.
- Comfort facilitating formal meetings with partners and other stakeholders.
- Comfort with public speaking and communicating on natural resource policy issues to diverse audiences and in formal settings.
- Familiarity water management and stakeholders in New Mexico.
- Familiarity with federal land and water management agencies including, but not limited to the Bureau of Reclamation, United States Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management, and associated planning and funding processes.
- Experience working with sporting and conservation non-profit groups and in coalitions on water or natural resource related issues.
- Experience working and/or leading federal and/or state policy advocacy campaigns.
- Advanced degree in public policy, law, water resources, or other related field.
- Familiarity with social, economic, and political conditions and issues in the Rio Grande watershed.

The Johnson Creek Watershed Council (JCWC) promotes the restoration and stewardship of a healthy Johnson Creek Watershed through sound science and community engagement. This diverse Watershed, located on the east side of the greater Portland metropolitan region, is a 26-mile tributary of the Willamette River flowing through unincorporated Clackamas County, Gresham, Portland, and Milwaukie with headwaters near Cottrell in Clackamas County. POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director partners with government agencies to identify restoration and stewardship needs and acquire funds to complete the work. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director manages six staff members and oversees an annual operating budget of approximately $1 million.RESPONSIBILITIES
Community Relations/Outreach Lead and work with jurisdictional partners (federal, state, regional, county, and city) to evaluate and identify watershed restoration and stewardship needs. River Programs Associate

- State water policy and local implementation of national water policy and laws
- Support and participate in a national State Revolving Fund (SRF) State Advocates Forum, including technical support for national quarterly calls, updating and maintaining Forum website, and supporting Drinking Water Program Director in workgroup and cohort training series.
- Update and maintain the State Policy Hub’s sections on: State Revolving Fund policies, Environmental Justice policies, and Water data transparency policies, and other additions as needed.

- Create baseline education curriculum for “train the trainer” style workshops to deliver Drinking Water Guide content to local organizations interested in public education of drinking water issues and advocacy opportunities.
- Build relationships with prospective and existing members of the network in regions currently under-represented in our work (broadly in the west, EPA regions 8, 9, and 10). Identify key drinking water concerns and map out avenues for River Network to expand our support services (especially around water availability/access, state policy on water use, concerns over privatization, impacts of drought and wildfires on drinking water supplies and drinking water (and wastewater) infrastructure).
Cross-Cutting River Programs
- Provide additional capacity for work across River Network’s focus areas of drinking water, climate resilient communities, and healthy, resilient rivers.
Internal Organizational Support
- Support program-related communications efforts including making trainings available to network members via YouTube, incorporating program updates into the River Network website, drafting social media posts, and other items in collaboration with communications staff.

Community Engagement Manager
Job Purpose
The goal of SYRCL’s River People program is to unite the community for effective advocacy on behalf of the Yuba watershed. The Community Engagement Manager implements SYRCL’s River People program’s goals of community engagement, volunteerism, outreach, and information exchange. The CEM is the primary point-person for volunteer recruitment, retention, recognition, and management for SYRCL programs and events that rely on volunteer participation. The Community Engagement Manager (CEM) reports to the Communications & Engagement Director. The CEM is expected to exercise judgement and provide management for a range of activities and programs promoting community engagement. These include direct outreach, recruitment, and management of SYRCL’s volunteers, production of annual events (River Cleanup, State of the Yuba, and Quiz Night), and supporting other events such as the Wild and Scenic Film Festival. The CEM is responsible for:- Engaging volunteers to participate in many of SYRCL’s work, including SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival.
- Ensuring that SYRCL engages in regular communication with the community in conjunction with the Education and Outreach Coordinator.
- Organizing the annual River Cleanup, State of the Yuba, and Quiz Night.
- Managing event and volunteer budgets in coordination with the Communications & Engagement Director.
Duties and Responsibilities
Volunteer Management
Volunteer recruitment, training, management and being the primary point-of-contact for SYRCL events including: the River Cleanup, Quiz Night, Wild for the Yuba, State of the Yuba, and the annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival. The CEM may assist in volunteer recruitment in SYRCL’s River Ambassador and River Monitoring programs, as well as other restoration programs.- Maintain, promote, and develop a wide range of volunteer opportunities within the organization.
- Collaborate with staff regularly to assess the need for volunteer assistance.
- Develop and implement a written plan for volunteer recruitment, retention, and recognition.
- Conduct and/or arrange for volunteer orientation and training and ensure that volunteers are sufficiently trained in the duties of the assignment.
- Schedule all volunteer activity (through online platform).
- Develop and manage volunteer policies, procedures, and standards of volunteer service.
- Evaluate all aspects of volunteer programs to ensure effectiveness and to recommend/implement changes as appropriate.
- Organize and participate in volunteer appreciation and recognition programs and special events.
- Maintain accurate records and provide timely statistical and activity reports on volunteer participation. Collect and organize data to help increase engagement.
- Provide ongoing support and guidance for volunteers and provide opportunities to resolve grievances and promote cooperation and interest.
- Assist in keeping volunteer pages and events on the SYRCL website updated.
- Work with Communications & Engagement Director to identify successes and shortcomings regarding volunteer recruitment and retention.
Event Coordination and Support
- Serve as the primary event manager for the annual River Cleanup Day, Quiz Night, and the State of the Yuba
- Assist the Communications & Engagement Director in developing and implementing a detailed event plan and budget.
- Provide direct support to the Development Director for the organization of volunteer participation in SYRCL’s community building and fundraising events.
- Develop debriefs after major events and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Supervise the PR/Marketing of events in conjunction with the Communications & Engagement Director, the Development Director, and the Education & Outreach Coordinator.
- Create outreach, media, and communications materials to recruit and appreciate volunteers as needed.
- Design community engagement materials as needed.
- Assist with fundraising efforts for volunteer-based events.
- Support the Education and Outreach Coordinator with identifying and staffing tabling opportunities at community events
- Support the coordination of activities with other SYRCL staff and departments as is necessary to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.
Other Duties/Responsibilities
- The CEM will assist with grant writing and seek sponsorships for the River People programs in coordination with the Development Director and the Communications & Engagement Director.
- The CEM will have a weekly collaboration/coordination meeting with the Communications & Engagement Director.
- The CEM will help prepare a monthly staff report for the Board.
- The CEM will assist the Communications & Engagement Director in the creation and management of the following budgets: Outreach, Volunteers, River Cleanup, Quiz Night, and State of the Yuba.
Qualifications

River Network seeks a mission-driven, entrepreneurial leader who shares our vision of a powerful and inclusive movement that ensures abundant clean water for all people and nature to thrive. We seek a leader that demonstrates humility, values collaboration, and brings the passion, skills, and enthusiasm needed to lead our national 20-person team and grow our $4M annual operating budget. Our CEO is the primary liaison to River Network’s Board of Directors and the leader and partner of our internal leadership team. This person will also play a pivotal role in forging new and important partnerships, including within the funding community, representing our organization’s vision, values, and strategies effectively. Our CEO supervises senior staff and provides leadership that aligns with River Network’s values, purpose, and programs. We seek an experienced candidate who values water as essential to both people and planet, and who is committed to centering racial justice at the intersection of water protection, access, and equity. Our CEO will work closely with the senior leadership team to refine and evolve strategies to advance the organization’s priorities. Our new leader will work to sustain a shared vision and understanding of strategies and implementation plans and ensure that all staff members understand key performance indicators and the use of data to track impacts and goals. Gathering continuous input and feedback from staff, member organizations, and board will be essential in fulfilling this role.People and Culture Leadership
Our CEO will have the opportunity to work with a talented, mission-driven, and committed staff. Our CEO will center an inclusive leadership style, demonstrating cultural competency and emotional intelligence, and inspiring growth of our organization’s culture of centering equity, inclusion, diversity, and justice. Our CEO will oversee the teams and strategies necessary to maintain a sustainable and supportive work environment for all staff.Fundraising and Resource Development
Our CEO will play a key role in fundraising efforts, and work with the philanthropy team and the board to diversify River Network’s revenue sources. They will work closely with the philanthropy and communication teams to strategically position the organization as a reliable partner and key ally with individual donors, significant corporate partners, key government agencies, and foundations in collaboration with our staff and board members.External Affairs and Relationships
As the primary ambassador for River Network’s “brand”, our CEO will raise River Network’s profile through relationships with members; other nonprofits; federal, state, local, and Tribal government agencies; community leaders; foundations; donors; and businesses. Our CEO will also continue to nurture and expand relationships with frontline communities, community-based organizations, and justice-oriented organizers – all in an effort to support the organization’s goal of advancing environmental and climate equity and justice.Fiscal and Operational Oversight
Our CEO will ensure the organization follows best financial practices, in compliance with applicable laws. Our CEO will also collaborate with senior team members and other staff to align budgets with program priorities, sustain or build efficient and effective systems, encourage transparency, ensure equitable staff compensation and professional growth, and promote effective communication across the organization.Board Engagement
Our CEO reports to a board that meets four times per year – typically two virtual meetings and two in person. Our CEO will ensure a strong working relationship with the board and board chair, work to align organizational outcomes with mission focus, provide timely information to board committees, and serve as a conduit between board and staff.Program Evolution and Oversight
Our CEO will provide strategic leadership and oversight of River Network’s programs, working collaboratively with staff to identify opportunities for better integration across our program areas. This will include regular review of outcomes to ensure compliance with donor requirements.Our Ideal Candidate

- Personal and professional understanding of how diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice play a central role in both advancing equity within an organization and in creating a more just and inclusive environmental movement;
- Strong and effective oral and written communication skills with a high degree of emotional intelligence, humility, and compassion;
- Demonstrated prowess in nonprofit leadership, management, governance, fundraising, and administration; experience working with or serving on boards of directors and similar advisory groups; reliable delivery of crucial contributions to teams and coalitions;
- Financial acumen, including experience developing or overseeing the development of complex annual and multi-year budgets for organizations of similar size and complexity as River Network;
- Ability to help staff reach their greatest potential; experience leading dispersed teams, and helping them thrive when face-to-face opportunities to build trust are not consistently available;
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and to define and track deadlines, progress, and contributions of others;
- Commitment to River Network’s Core Values, including respect, integrity, growth, and inclusion;
- Ten years of relevant nonprofit leadership experience, and a degree in a field related to River Network’s mission and vision.
Salary and Location
Candidates can be located anywhere in the U.S. but must have the ability to travel as needed. The annual base salary for this role will be competitive and commensurate with the successful candidate’s skills and experiences. The projected salary for this role is $170,000-190,000, with comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision health insurance; 403b retirement savings plan; vacation and well-being leave; employee assistance program; life insurance; technology stipend; and paid holidays.River Network’s EEO Statement

Communications Associate
- Conduct a one-time inclusive communications analysis, researching best practices and analyzing current River Network strategies and tactics, and sharing findings with the network.
- Collaborate with Communications Director and Communications Manager to implement suggested changes and recommendations from inclusive communications analysis across specific communications channels further identified below.
- Execute and expand River Network’s social media presence, including graphic creation and follower engagement, helping turn followers into River Network members and supporters.
- Support membership recruitment and stewardship efforts as directed by Membership & Communications Manager, including campaigns, renewals, and other administration of membership benefits.
- Manage email audience database in Mailchimp, updating bounced emails and employing other list management best practices.
- Explore and implement new audience engagement opportunities including welcome journeys, additional engagement campaigns, retargeting and others as identified in collaboration with other Philanthropy & Communications staff.
- Serve as primary moderator for River Network’s Online Community, hosted within Mobilize.
- Support the planning of River Network’s signature national conference, River Rally:
- Coordinate with the Membership & Communications Manager on social media promotion.
- Assist with some specialized communications.
- On-site communications and logistics support, as identified in the planning process.
- One or more years professional communications experience, including internships or hands-on volunteer positions with experience developing and implementing successful communications strategies and campaigns.
- Exceptional written communication skills, proven experience translating complex and technical concepts into compelling and clear messages for specific audiences.
- Detail-oriented, with proven experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, delivering assignments within stringent deadlines, and effective communication around shifting needs and/or priorities.
- Technologically savvy, with proficiency in communications tools (including most of the following: Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, Hootsuite, Mailchimp, Canva), and MS Office programs (Word, Outlook, etc.).
- Willingness to travel when necessary to attend organizational events, including national River Rally conference, staff retreat, and other events as identified.
- Knowledge of and/or interest in following current and evolving trends in the nonprofit communications space.
- Commitment to values of mutual respect and collaboration, teamwork, and embracing and promoting diversity.
- Some topic knowledge of the environmental and water sectors is preferred, but not required.
- Some familiarity with digital accessibility is preferred, but not required.
- Experience with or willingness to learn Adobe Suite, Wordpress, Salesforce, mail merge, and video editing skills are great to have, but not required. Training and/or professional development opportunities will be made available as needed.
