The Land Conservation Coordinator is responsible for tracking, monitoring, and managing existing conservation easements and Cumberland River Compact fee properties. The position requires frequent engagement with landowners to maintain good communication and manage obligations and rights under conservation easements. The position entails primary responsibility for annual stewardship monitoring visits, review of project restrictions, and identification of possible easement violations. The position reports to the Executive Director and is part of the Stream Restoration team. The majority of this position will be implemented within the Compact’s compensatory stream mitigation work to ensure regulatory compliance with USACE standards. This position includes technical desk work as well as field work. The Land Conservation Coordinator helps the stream restoration team with their long-term conservation goals.

Schedule

This role is a flexible part-time position at 20 hours per week with potential for full-time.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor conservation easements annually (plan, coordinate, schedule, and conduct monitoring visits with landowners and stream restoration staff.)
  • Fully document the current condition of each property and maintain files/databases.
  • Resolve conservation easement violations in a timely and professional manner, consistent with land trust policy and standard operating procedures for potential violations.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with landowners.
  • Work directly with landowners and stream restoration staff to identify conservation goals and to overcome project challenges.
  • Work with external legal counsel to draft legal documents and overcome legal challenges associated with conservation easements.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and external requirements, including alignment with the Land Trust Alliance’s Standards and Requirements.
  • Assist Cumberland River Compact’s ILF program when needed.
  • Promote and further the mission of the Cumberland River Compact.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a natural resource major (Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource Conservation) and 2+ years of related experience in land conservation, specifically related to conservation easements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, landowners, project partners, and other external partners.
  • Must be able to work independently in variable, sometimes difficult weather conditions in remote outdoor locations for longer periods of time.
  • Must be a team player and also be able to work independently.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and resourceful, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks, assignments, and priorities.
  • Familiarity with compensatory stream mitigation or ecosystem-based markets is a plus.
  • Experience with Upstream Tech Lens Geospatial Analysis is a plus.
