Event Info

River Network has been providing resources and training for groups on how to understand, access and influence federal funding via our Tap Into Federal Funding initiative. In this learning session, we will focus on two Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) WaterSMART grant programs: Cooperative Watershed Management Program (CWMP) and Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration Program (AERP). We will be joined by presenters from the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) and two local watershed groups who successfully secured WaterSMART funds. TRCP will give an overview of the grant programs, followed by the two groups who will share their experience applying for the funds, including challenges and lessons learned. There will be time for discussion and Q&A at the end.

This webinar is open to all network members located in the 17 Western United States and Territories, where WaterSmart funds are allocated.

Background

The Bureau of Reclamation’s (BOR) received $2.1 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) to fund BOR’s WaterSMART and Aquatic Ecosystems Infrastructure grant programs. With a focus within the 17 Western United States and Territories, these investments help states, tribes, and local entities plan for and implement projects that increase future water supplies for farms, cities, people, and the environment.

The Cooperative Watershed Management Program provides funding to watershed groups to encourage diverse stakeholders to form local solutions to address their water management needs. And the Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration Program provides cost shared funding to study, design and construct aquatic ecosystem restoration projects that are collaboratively developed, have widespread regional benefits, and result in the improvement of the health of fisheries, wildlife, and aquatic habitat.

Both grant programs have funding through 2025. Applications for the second round of CWMP funding is due September 3rd, 2024, and AERP funding will have applications opening in July/August 2024.
